Lot#: 167

DESCRIPTION: APW - Charles Fasoldt, Rome, NY, co-axial double wheel escapement chronometer, 17J, approximately 20S (46mm dial diameter), silver original F.D. & Co. (Francis DuBois & Co., Brooklyn, NY) HC with 1860 marking inside lids presumably as a date rather than a s#, cuvette engraved "C. Fasold's (sic) Isochronal Patent Chronometer, Rome, N.Y.," white enamel canister style (snap on) dial, KWKS, co-axial chronometer lever escapement with capped escape wheel, gilt mvt marked "C Fasoldt's Patent Febry 1 1859" for Fasoldt's earlier style escapement design with two pallets, s#43. Watch is accompanied by a 1987 letter from Stephen B. Helfant detailing some of the attributes of the present watch. An important and extremely rare watch from Charles Fasoldt's original Rome, New York location; Fasoldt's move from Rome to Albany, New York occured during 1861 and watches made at the Rome location are substantially rarer with only a small number of examples known. Per Mike Harrold's excellent "Charles Fasoldt, Horologist and Inventor" book it is believed that Fasoldt produced somewhat less than 450 watches in total and that the transition from Rome to Albany production occurred at roughly serial number 55. With its notable rare features of original case bearing Rome signature, helical hairspring, and earliest style Fasoldt escapement with two pallets (as opposed to the three pallet design typical of Fasoldt production following the move to Albany), the present watch is an exceptional piece for the early American watch collector. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, some fine and micro-fine scratches, steelwork with some scattered bits of oxide; excellent dial with a small hl above seconds-register; excellent but mismatched hands, hour is plum colored, minute and seconds-hand are blue, minute with slight bend; case with broken or missing lift spring, case shows ample wear, few very small nicks, no dents, engine turning virtually fully lost from lids with only some minimal slight traces remaining evident at a few portions, majority of band with engine turning detail fully lost but a smaller portion of band retains some engine turning detail, cuvette has a very slight bit of side-to-side play at its hinge which shows a small bit of metal loss to the left side of its central tube and also shows repair evident to the outer segments of hinge tube; tight bow, push shows ample wear; plastic crystal with some scratches.
ESTIMATE: $15000 - $30000
